September 2026

Nau mai, haere mai, welcome to everyone,

Peter managed to surprise Ann (not an easy task) when we went out for a meal to celebrate our anniversary. He had invited 5 of our friends from the village to come along and help us celebrate at Ann’s favourite restaurant.

After the bonsai club meeting we made a quick stop at Steve’s place to pick up some moss for our trees for the show. Ann asked if it was okay to leave the car doors open as Steve’s cats were out in the garden. Absolutely, he said. The cats are very well behaved, he said. They never go into any cars, he said.  Millie (cat number 1), snuck into the car and stole the bag of dog treats. Peter had to chase her around the garden to retrieve the treats. Five minutes later George (cat number 2) decided he wanted to investigate our car as well. Each time Ann put him outside George jumped back into the car!

Lunchtime on a roaming shift at the gardens.

A full week of preparation leading up to the bonsai club show then a very busy three days with setup on the Friday and two days of the show.

Dianne and Noel arrived for the show weekend too. Sox was quick to make friends with Dianne.

Dinner at Noel’s favourite Thai restaurant

Peter and Drew filled the truck with the Torii gate, all the backing boards, big trees etc. Peter had already packed the Ute and trailer, and lastly, Ann’s car.

Congratulations to Ann on getting 3rd place with her Himalayan Cedar at our show (the one Peter repotted for her in July).

A photographer from the Waikato Times came to the show on the Sunday to take photos for an article. As well as taking photos of Peter, some trees and several other club members she took photos of two of our friends who were recording a session for their podcast, Crouching Deadwood, Hidden Nebari.

Over a hundred trees were on display.

After the show Peter managed to get everything put away by lunchtime on Wednesday before he went to ‘work’ – his regular Wednesday afternoon volunteer shift at Hamilton Gardens.

Peter got a preview of the new Medieval Garden the day before it opened to the public.

A friend of our neighbour managed to reverse into our mailbox (not the first time that’s happened). The friend was very apologetic but it didn’t take Peter long to find another post and fixed it.

One afternoon whilst Ann was eating a banana Sox began to pay close attention. After a few hesitant sniffs and licks (to make sure it wasn’t poisonous of course) she took a piece, then another and then a third piece!

The annual village craft fair was on at the end of the month.  It always takes place on the first weekend of the school holiday.  Peter went early to avoid the crowds. although it was rainingto a wet annual craft fair in the village. Despite a number of empty spaces for stalls, he managed to get some fudge for Ann.
