February 2024

Kia ora,

We had a couple of windy days at the start of the month. We were well prepared and all the bonsai that we thought could be blown over were placed on the ground. However the wind managed to find one of the larger trees which was blown off its stand but luckily wasn’t damaged.

We heard the siren for the local fire brigade three times on the Saturday afternoon as they were called out for emergencies. In the village there were full size trees blown over and fallen branches everywhere. When we went for our walk on the Sunday morning we came upon this tree which had originally fallen halfway across the main road.

Azaria moved into her new home and invited us around for dinner. We had a fabulous evening and it was so good to see how happy Azaria was.

Azaria wanted to show Ann her new duvet – despite the heat and humidity!

Ann is back down to one session per fortnight at the Hamilton Gardens Information Centre as Peter now has temporary help from another volunteer until a permanent replacement is found.  The renovation of the old Information Centre is coming along well and will look stunning once it’s completed.

The latest bonsai course for beginners started up this month. Peter led the first session which is about the history and general information regarding bonsai.

Covid finally caught up with Peter towards the end of the month. He’s not been too badly affected but does get tired when trying to do too much physical activity. Ann also had a positive RAT test but no symptoms, so she walked both girls (well – walked Sox and chauffeured Honey) for a few days whilst Peter recovered.

Despite the weather improving greatly by the end of the month with no strong winds, our feijoa tree decided it no longer needed one of its branches. Looks like our friend, Sandra who adores this weird fruit, will be on short rations in the autumn.

Sox is very good at posing for the camera ……….

……… Honey, on the other hand, is not!
