Kia ora,
Autumn is now here and although the days can still be warm – 18-20 degrees – the nights are turning cold. In fact in the last week of March night time temps dropped down to 3-5 degrees which prompted us to move the frost tender bonsai onto the deck to protect them.

A bonsai friend has had some health challenges lately meaning she hasn’t been able to work on her bonsai so Ann organised a working party of bonsai club members to do some weeding and pruning. The day we all visited was also Marshall’s birthday.
Ann celebrated her 63rd birthday. Peter and the girls gave her more books and we went out for a meal.
Dianne, bonsai friend from Kerikeri in the far north, visited for a couple of days. Sandra came over and we had a good, long overdue catchup.
Honey loves snoozing on the chipped bark amongst the bonsai stands – you’d think it would be uncomfortable wouldn’t you?
Sox looks guilty or surprised but not sure what for though.
At the monthly bonsai club meeting Peter did a demonstration on how to create a tanuki bonsai – bonsai tree on a piece of deadwood/driftwood.
Peter also did some teaching at the bonsai beginners class on how to repot a bonsai.
On the 18th Peter finished slicing up the firewood trees ready for splitting.
Then he hired a wood splitter for the day. It took him almost seven hours to do the majority of the wood. The bigger pieces from the base of the trees were considerably wider than those of the last trees we had cut down so they took longer. The long process of wheelbarrowing all the firewood chunks to the other end of the paddock and stacking them in the woodsheds was completed on the 29th.
We had an extra ‘work’ training session at the Hamilton Gardens this month. It was all about the new building works for the pavilion, information centre and cafe. Lots of changes over the next 9-12 months – but we’ll still be needed as volunteers.
The girls are both fine. Sox loves snuggling on the sofa (when not out walking, riding in the car or Ute or racing around the garden).
Honey’s default position (when not outside with her partner in crime, getting into trouble).
