May 2026

Kia ora,

The heater element in the front loader washing machine in the garage failed meaning we could only use it for cold washes, it also randomly locked the door so we could not get the washing out. Time to upgrade to a new machine. Peter’s been very happy with his new, very swish washing machine as it’s doing a great job with the laundry now!

Sandra came for lunch and some quiet time after the unexpected passing of her little brother. The next day we met up with Christine for brunch in a cafe in Te Kowhai.

We had a very dry month with mostly fine sunny days but cool  (Ann says bloody cold} nights with temperatures dropping to around 3 degrees. A few days were foggy but that is to be expected in the Waikato.

We had a trip to the cinema in Te Awamutu to see the new film on Hamilton Gardens

Japanese Garden in Autumn colour.

Honey developed another couple of lumps on the inside of her thigh so she was booked in for surgery to remove them. We do not want a repeat of the 5 days before her surgery. Trying to keep a dressing on Honey was a nightmare. She would literally lick it until the lumps bled and the dressing fell off. As she licked her other three limbs she transferred blood and would look like she’d waded through a puddle of blood.  Peter began to dread each morning when he let the girls out of the laundry. Twenty one stitches over three wounds and a swish body suit to stop her licking.

Sox was happy to see Honey.

Just after Honey’s surgery we noticed a similar lump on one of Sox’s back legs! So back to the vets we went and booked her in for surgery the week after Honey. Both girls developed abscesses and needed antibiotics. Sox and Peter had slow walks around the paddock for a week to allow for recovery. Peter was happy for a rest in the mornings.

The Corokia hedge down the drive is now all trimmed and Peter has finished cutting up all the smaller firewood branches from the felled trees and pittosporum hedge. He has now started on another section of Red Robin hedge.

Ann managed to stub her little toe causing it and almost half of her foot to look black and blue. A week later she tripped and fell on the kitchen floor tiles landing on her knees. It took her an exhausting 15 minutes to bottom shuffle over to the coffee table where her phone was and call Peter over in the sleepout working on his model railway. Then we had an indepth discussion on the best way to pick me up. Our final plan required moving the dogs around and removing the sofa cushions into a shallow step configuration.  Then all Ann had to do was bum shuffle  backwards up the cushion steps! Physio and exercise bike sessions were postponed for the rest of the month – until Ann’s knees felt better.

Honey hates it whenever Ann wants to sit at her desk and work on her laptop. Ann has tried to discourage Honey from pawing at her but Honey is relentless when she’s on a mission. Even putting her walking frame ‘around’ her only worked a few times – until Honey worked out how to get under it.

Ann signed up for Sandra’s shohin workshop which was both practical and informative. Now Peter has to make more boxes and paint them black so Ann can display some of the shohin bonsai at the club show in September.

What to do on a cold wintery day?

Snuggle up on a sofa for the afternoon!
