October 2023

Nau mai, haere mai – Hello and welcome,

Sox made a couple of new friends whilst on one of her daily walks around the village with Peter. They were walking past some roadworks putting in an access road to a new subdivision. Both of the stop-go signal workers wanted to say hello and give her a fuss, and one of them even gave her a piece of their sausage as a treat.

Waiting patiently for Peter to go walkies!

Happily Honey continues to love her car rides – especially at the moment when her walks are limited because of sore and infected paw pads (again).

Term 3 holidays were in October so Azaria and Carolien came out for a coffee and home made chocolate brownies (of course)!

Our neighbours, Bev and Tom, were in Napier for a few weeks and Ann went round to feed the cat and the chooks. Honey ‘helped’ in the mornings and Sox was ‘supervisor’ in the afternoons.  One of the chooks was very clucky and refused to get off the eggs in the hen house so Ann learned to lift her off and move her to where the chicken feed was. She’s now a fully qualified chook wrangler!

As a ‘thank you’ Bev and Tom treated us to a lovely meal out.

The tui’s have really enjoyed drinking the nectar from the cherry trees in the village.

Our friend Marshall had to move into residential care from her house in the retirement village. This meant we had to deal with her remaining bonsai trees as she was unable to care for them at all. It took us three trips with the Ute and trailer as well as a trip with Ann’s car to pick up all the trees, benches, pots, tools, books, display stands and bonsai bits and bobs, and then bring everything back to our place.

This group planting took up almost half of the trailer.

Peter then spent a day setting up the benches in the garden to hold all the trees. He also sorted out all of Marshall’s digital photos and put them on two hard drives for her family.

Les (from the bonsai club) invited us to join him and Melody, and a number of others for a very enjoyable evening meal at the Hamilton Gardens Cafe to celebrate his 80th birthday.

Les is 80 and still working! They make ’em tough here in NZ!

Bonsai friends Dianne and Noel came down from Kerikeri for the event and stopped with us for a couple of nights.

Morning tea with Dianne and Noel.

Peter picked up another second hand loco from the UK. 9319 is the same class as 9303, the loco John and Peter started working on once 5164 was back in steam. As this is an older model it is unlikely it will run on Peter’s layout without major modifications, so it will just be renumbered for the moment.

One morning Honey and I were stopped from walking down one of the paths in the village. This part of the village is one of Honey’s favourite routes and when she saw the sign she sat and just looked between it and me. Her expression was priceless!

Closed?! That can’t be right! This is my favourite path because there’s always lots of lovely smells and the promise of snacks along here.
