    During the war JX 207804 Dawson served in the Royal Navy as a D.E.M.S. gunner manning the armament on Merchant Ships. He is listed as serving in the Portsmouth division having signed up on 16th July 1940. His papers show him serving on the Victory till 31st August 1940 and then at HMS President III, the administrative base for D.E.M.S. Gunners untill demob on 28th November 1945 with the rank of Acting Petty Officer. He was awarded his first Good Conduct badge on 16th July 1943
