This had originally been a cavalry regiment, which was dismounted and became part of The Black Watch in Egypt on 1st January 1917. He first served in France from 24th Feb 1915. The Battalion was involved in the Battles of Gaza in 1917. Walter was reported wounded on November 6th 1917 at the 3rd Battle of Gaza (Beersheba & the Capture of the Sheria Position) and was invalided back to UK. Issued with the 'Silver War Badge' and demobbed 27th Feb 1919 (listed as no longer physically fit for war service). He met Rose whilst Walter was in hospital based in Dogpool School and Highbury Hall after being injured in WW1. Rose was in a group of girls from Nettlefolds who came round singing to the troops.
